Early Scottish Paintings

“Rae constantly travels to paint, but she does not do so in a rootless, roving way. Rather, the places she chooses as her destinations always seem to have a history and are thus places where she can immerse herself in the locality, both present and past...

She has also worked in a wide range of places nearer home in Scotland, where she painted regularly before she began to travel more widely. In the 1980s, for instance, she spent time painting at Leith Docks, where she had an abandoned building for a studio...From early on in her career she also painted extensively on the west coast of Scotland, and a number of paintings in this show were made during this time.”
